NJ Ranked as 8th Friendliest State for Bicyclists

The League of American Cyclists ranked New Jersey as the 8th friendliest state in the nation for bicyclists in the 2010 version of their annual rankings, up two spots from 2009. The top five states in the survey were

Washington, Wisconsin, Maine, Minnesota and Oregon. Beyond the overall ranking, New Jersey generally fared well in the specific categories addressed in the survey:

  • Legislation (15th)
  • Policies and Programs (3rd-T)
  • Infrastructure (3rd)
  • Education (31st)
  • Evaluation (10th)
  • Enforcement (25th)

In a press release touting the results, the NJDOT highlighted its recently adopted ‘Complete Streets’ policy, which requires that all “future roadway improvement construction projects include safe accommodations for all users, including bicyclists, pedestrians, transit riders and the mobility impaired”.
